Interior Door Sizes: Standard Dimensions and Custom Options

Understand standard interior door widths, heights, and thicknesses — plus when a custom or made-to-order size makes sense.

Ordering the right door starts with understanding sizes. Interior doors follow fairly consistent standards, but there is more nuance than most homeowners expect — especially once you move into taller, modern proportions or made-to-order slabs.

Standard interior door widths

Common interior widths run in two-inch steps: 24, 28, 30, 32, and 36 inches. Bedrooms and main rooms usually use 30 or 32 inches, bathrooms often 28, and closets anywhere from 24 inches up depending on the opening. A 36-inch door is the accessible choice and is common for main passages.

Standard heights

The classic height is 80 inches (6’8”). Contemporary homes increasingly use taller doors — 84, 90, and 96 inches — to create a more dramatic, architectural feel. Our invisible door systems are built to those taller proportions specifically because they make a wall read as intentional and refined.

Thickness

Most interior slabs are 1-3/8 inch thick. Solid-core and premium doors may be thicker, which improves sound control and gives the door a substantial feel when it swings.

When to go custom

Older Central Florida homes and custom builds frequently have openings that do not match a stock size. Because every Slab & Trim door is made to order, we can build to your exact width and height rather than forcing you to trim down a stock slab. That is a real advantage for tall openings and non-standard remodels.

Measure before you order

For a slab replacement, measure the existing door itself — width, height, and thickness — and note the hinge and hardware positions. For a new opening, measure the rough opening. Our step-by-step measuring guide walks through it, and because all sales are final on made-to-order doors, send us your numbers if you are unsure — we will confirm the right size before you buy.
